What is System Center Configuration Manager?

SCCM is a comprehensive management solution for computer systems utilizing Microsoft Windows operating systems. Additionally, SCCM provides some management capabilities for Linux, UNIX, Mac OS, and mobile devices. With Configuration Manager, IT technicians proactively manage the entire lifecycle of all Windows-powered devices. This includes deploying and maintaining systems and software, responding to security threats, distributing settings, and analyzing inventory data.

What services are provided by SCCM?

Who will be affected?

Any user on campus whose department decides to use SCCM for device management.

What types of devices will be managed?

SCCM is capable managing Windows, iOS, and various Linux devices.

I am a faculty or staff member with a device that I use to work from home, will my device be managed by SCCM?

If the device is university-owned and attached to Active Directory and your department is using SCCM for device management, you will use this service.

Will using SCCM limit productivity of the computer? What happens if you're on the computer when an update is pushed? Will data be lost?

Those client and end point protection SCCM activities should not have an impact on device productivity.

How secure is it?

Each machine gets a machine-based cert from the certificate authority in Active Directory. The infrastructure uses SSL structure for secure communication between client and cert.

How/when are updates pushed?

Updates are determined by each department admin.

Can you block an update or block someone from seeing your computer?

Updates and remote control are determined by the department admin.

Can you manage my university-owned Microsoft Surface device?

Yes, DIT can manage it and will look more into in additional management features in the future.

Who do I contact about technical issues related to SCCM services, such as updates to antivirus and applications?

The IT Service Desk is the contact point for assistance with SCCM issues.
